Everyturn, South Shields
This well-established group, supported by Everyturn, shared a deep interest in local history and folklore — a strength that became the driving force of their creative work. Drawing on research and personal curiosity, they chose to celebrate Dolly Peel, a South Shields fishwife, smuggler, poet and rebel.
Working collaboratively, the group transformed historical facts and maritime mythology into a storyboard, a sea-shanty-style ballad. A pivotal bonding moment of the group was when one member lead the group translation of the shanty from standard English into lyrical Geordie. Roles emerged naturally, pride grew visibly, and the project demonstrated how creative escape — grounded in place and story — can strengthen confidence, connection and collective resilience.
